Tuesday, September 18th

Today was a long day. Olivia had a mild fever and was spitting up, which made her more sensitive to everything. She was laughing one minute and crying the next. It also affected her appetite. She's such a good eater - about five (ice)cubes of food plus yogurt or oat cereal & some rice cookies at each meal, on top of milk! - that I know she mustn't have been feeling her best.
Olivia got her first stern NO today. She decided that she should spit apple-blueberry all over, repeatedly. So after some light scolding I finally held her gaze and said no firmly & a little louder, without smiling. She cried. Part of me felt like the mean mommy, but part of me was glad that she understood something of my message. And it could have been coincidence, but there was no more spitting after that.
Olivia took her naps at the normal nap times  (11 & 3) today and she's now comfortable enough in the routine that I can put her down and even if she's fussing for a few minutes I know she'll go to sleep soon. So I got to catch up with friends on the phone and visit with my friend Veronica.
By the time Daddy was home, Olivia was in a pretty good mood. She picked out lots of toys - on her own! - to play with. Today's favorite plaything, however, was a plastic straw. I know it's been said many times before, but with all the beautiful toys she has to choose from she often chooses these 'silly' toys - a plastic straw, a wooden spoon, keys, etc.

Bath time was fun - as always - and Daddy made up another song. Each night Adam makes up a little ditty to serenade Olivia with. Tonight's I've titled "Cold Belly". It was delightful. She went to bed without a single protest, and I hope she gets a good night's sleep & feels better in the morning.
