January 20, 2012

We had a pleasant day today. In the late morning we took a trip to the Commissary for a few groceries. In particular I wanted to get some cold cuts & sandwich fixings so that I could prepare some sandwiches to keep in the fridge for moments when I'm hungry and have limited time in the kitchen. Olivia slept soundly in the cart and since the commissary has baggers who help you carry your groceries to your car, it was a very easy trip. We stopped by Burger King on the way home and Olivia & I ate our lunches 'together' - so to speak.

After lunch, I put Olivia in her vibrating chair & hung up her new friend the moose & took her upstairs to try out a new 'shower plan'. It was more relaxing for me to be able to see her clearly while in the shower and she seemed amused enough in her seat. All in all - a success! When the shower was over, Olivia was asleep & I carried her - still vibrating - downstairs. I took advantage of the time to tidy up and to make those sandwiches.

When Olivia got up, she spent a little time in the swing while I ran the vacuum through the living room - where we've been making the most mess. Naps were not on Olivia's agenda for the rest of the evening. So we played on the couch, looked at the Christmas lights, and played mommy's favorite 'kissing game'. The kissing game is where I kiss Olivia all over her face and Olivia 'kisses' me back...sometimes, sometimes she just looks bemused by this crazy woman kissing her. We also Skyped with Mimi & Pop and then Aunt Jenny, Uncle Sean & Owen! Even when a little fussy, Olivia was fun to look at - or maybe they're just blinded by love.

Morgan came over for dinner & our shows. Olivia amused us by sleeping in a funny position - with her hands up in the air like she was being robbed, or hanging onto a ledge. Later she enjoyed a new soothing technique where I cradled her head in my hand while she was supported by a pillow and I gently rocked her. Great workout for my forearms. Olivia spent the last part of the evening attached at the breast, even when she was clearly no longer eating. She did NOT want to be moved even when, (I thought), she was sleeping. I wonder why nighttime is becoming more troubling for her lately.

Once Morgan headed home and Olivia had eaten for the 200th time, I thought perhaps she just needed the security of 'sucking'. Since tomorrow she is officially FOUR WEEKS old (can you believe it?!) I decided to give a pacifier a try. It took her a few attempts to get hold of it, but then she gave it a try...for about two minutes. Out it flew and the screaming commenced. She wasn't fooled by this pacifier. Since we, literally, had just fed for about one hour (the last half of which she spent goofing off) and I knew her diaper was clean and I'd just held her for a long time, etc. - I let her scream for a little while I pulled out the laptop and began this entry. Once I couldn't take it anymore - probably under two minutes - I picked her up again. Instant silence. I've typed the rest of this with one hand while Olivia slept in the crook of my left arm. I just laid her down on my pillow, and will join her momentarily. I hope we sleep for a good while. Maybe she's just ready for a 'big girl' bed. ;) She's growing so quickly!
